About Us

Urban Krav Maga is a self-protection system which has its roots in Krav Maga as its name suggests. It additionally draws on a variety of other fighting systems such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) among others.

  • We will give you the confidence to know how to be aware of threats, know how to defend yourself and get fit at the same time.
  • I've been very fortunate to have learnt from some of the best instructors around, as well as bringing in my own experiences in a variety of situations. All of which will be shared and taught to you.
  • The system is designed to be very practical and you will definitely learn something from your first session with no prior experience needed.

Each week we cover the most common single and multiple attack scenarios, whilst incorporating realistic drills at all times. In addition to the intense combat training, we incorporate functional street fitness and humour so that you also enjoy yourself :) It is suitable for both females and males due to the focus on technique, surprise, speed and controlled aggression instead of strength and size.

I have been practising martial arts for 30+ years and Urban Krav maga for over 18 years, and a longer background in combatives, boxing and Muay Thai. I also have a variety of real world experience.

Brilliant self-defence class aimed at equipping you for potential real-life situations, practically.

Olivia R

Excellent, practical teaching of self defence, more based in reality than traditional martial arts. I signed up wanting to fill in some holes in my existing knowledge, having 3 years’ experience in wing chun kung fu. The class was even better than expected for that, but I would also stress that the class is good for beginners, too. The techniques are always firmly planted in what someone could actually pull off in a real world, messy fight. The style avoids overly showy, contrived, or highly-context-dependent techniques which traditional arts sometimes employ, which are less reliable. The instructor, Ijaz, is good-humoured and approachable, for me, walks just the right line between humour and seriousness. The classes are thorough and it is likely one will walk away with valuable knowledge and techniques from the first session. There is also a good emphasis on situational awareness and de-escalation. I myself have applied what I learned to defuse a situation where I was threatened with violence outside of my home.

The instructor Ijaz is exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating, but also an excellent teacher. I went on my own and thoroughly enjoyed my time training. After even just one session I feel better prepared to defend myself.

Having a few one to one sessions was a great way to get back into martial arts after a few years off. Ijaz was great in tailoring the sessions to my ability and preference so I would highly recommend it for anyone who is a complete beginner or has experience already.

Great class combining reality based scenarios and functional fitness. The technique drills are very informative and immediately you are able to determine how easily what you are learning can be implemented. Throughly recommend as a practical means of self defence

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will this be suitable for females?

Yes. We focus on techniques, speed and aggression - not size. If you are prepared to work hard and attend classes regularly then anyone can benefit !

  • Good question. We follow a rotating syllabus every few weeks. The idea is that the basics are drilled constantly so that they become second nature. Once you have attended classes regularly, you will start to see the benefits of what we teach and how the techniques and movements fit together. 1) We cover street striking techniques influenced by Muay Thai, boxing and BJJ as well as Krav Maga 2) Fight finish strikes and moves 3) Escape from headlocks/chokes 4) Pre fight indicators and awareness and de-escalation techniques 5) Resisting and escape from a multitude of grabs and holds 6) Pre-emptive defence against edged weapons - knives and bottles 7) Most common ground fighting scenarios and defence/escape 8) Switch from passive to controlled aggression state 9) Adrenaline management and control

  • Yes. This is reality based self defence and you should expect various degree of physical intensity throughout sessions. We train for the harsh reality of physical - including verbal aggression . If you would like a fitness only based class then I would suggest boxercise or some other non contact session. Please let me know ahead if you have any injuries

  • How long does anything worthwhile take ? :) time, persistence, application and practice. We drill the basics again and again ! Come along, work hard, stay consistent and you will reap the benefits

  • To simulate real life situations protective clothing is kept to a minimum. For sparring sessions - mma style open palm gloves, a gumshield and groin protector for men are required.

  • No we do not. Whilst grading and belts are a fantastic way of demonstrating progress through the many great martial arts out there, I feel it is less relevant here. The simple reason being that controlled aggression coupled with technique and movement/awareness is what we focus on primarily combined with real life street scenarios, not competition sport.

  • Inevitably yes you will although it is not the primary aim of the class given the length of time. I would recommend stretching and working on fitness conditioning separately as much as possible

  • The class is restricted in size - for both safety and quality control. I am very keen to provide a high quality teaching experience which allows me to focus on helping everyone.

  • No. We are not affiliated with Fitness First and are a separate organisation.
